How To Manage The Clothing You Don’t Need Right Now

It can be easy to accumulate more clothing than you wear on a daily basis. If you live somewhere with four distinct seasons, you are going to have clothing that is more appropriate for each season. You are going to have clothing that is more appropriate for certain types of occasions and activities, and for certain jobs. If you have too much clothing in your room, it is time to go through and manage your clothing. You should recycle worn out clothing, donate clothing that doesn't work for you, and store everything that you love but don't need to wear right now in a self-storage facility.

Store Clothing Based on Season & Occasion

First, for clothing that you do like to wear, sort the clothing by the season you like to wear the clothing during. For example, put your shorts in your spring or summer pile. Put your big puffy jacket in your winter pile. If you really get into special occasions, maybe you will have a pile just for Halloween or just with your favorite Christmas sweaters.

Then, take the clothing based on season, and pack up the seasons and special event clothing that you don't need right now. You are going to want to pack all of your clothing in an organized manner. Put all of your coats together in one tote, and all of your scarfs and hats together in another, all of your fall clothing in another, and all your halloween costume together. You are renting an entire storage unit, so you have room to organize things by function and season. Doing this will make it much easier to find what you need when you need it.

Before packing up your clothing, be sure to wash everything and allow it to dry all the way. Wet clothing will develop mold and mildew while in storage. Dirty clothing may attract pests, and will come out of storage not smelling that great. Wash all your clothing before packing it up.

You can use cardboard boxes if you want, but since you will be using this storage unit exclusively for your clothing, it is worth it to invest in plastic totes for your clothing. Line the plastic totes with acid-free paper that will keep moisture that may bead up on the plastic from impacting your clothing. Don't pack everything too tight; give your clothing room to breathe.

If you have shoes to pack, the same rules apply. Wash your shoes and get them as clean as possible before you pack them up and put them in storage.

Place labels on the tops and sides of all of your plastic totes. This will make it easier for you to pull your clothing out of the storage unit and swap items in and out of storage. Be detailed with your labels -- write the season or occasion for the clothing, as well as an exact list of what is inside of the box. Donate Clothing That Doesn't Work for You

Next, be honest with yourself about what you like, and you don't like. You don't have to keep an item just because you liked it at one point, and it is still in good condition. That is exactly what clothing donation stores were made for.

If you can't remember the last time you wore a piece of clothing, or if you only wear the clothing because you feel guilty, it is time to let it go. Create a pile of all the items that you want to donate. Make sure the items you want to donate are in good quality and clean. Don't donate clothing that smells like your sweat; always wash and clean all clothing before donating it.

Recycle Worn Out Clothing

As you go through your clothing, pull out clothing that are just worn out. Do you have shirts with holes in them? Pants where the crotch is worn out and strings are coming off? Socks that are discolored?

For items that are really worn out, it is time to let those items go. Don't try to save those items. Instead, find a place that will recycle the fabric in the clothing. Many places that take donations of clothing will also recycle worn-out clothing for you. This is better than putting the clothing in the trash.

When it comes to dealing with all the clothing in your room, take some time to go through it. Recycle worn out clothing. Donate items that just don't work for you anymore. Store clothing you don't need to keep on hand right now in labeled containers in a storage unit. Going through your room and storing your clothing will help give you back your room and give you space to move around.
